No love for Robert Zemeckis? Oh dear.
I love Burton, Miyazaki, Tarantino and Hitchcock... If I had to choose one (and I guess I do), I'd go with Burton.
Spielberg can be great, but all too often he'll tack on a silly happy ending (A.I., War of the Worlds, Minority Report), be generally clunky and hamfisted (Jurassic, Amistad, Hook, Saving Private Ryan), or bang on about his parents' divorce (everything). Since A.I. he's been on a streak of cracking films, though. Still haven't seen Munich.
Scorcese certainly knows how to put a film together but his stuff usually leaves me cold. He's a bit like Kubrick in that sense; I can admire the technical skill, but I just don't love his movies. Taxi Driver is superb, though.
Kurosawa is overrated beyond belief, although to be fair I've only seen Rashomon and Kagemusha. Didn't like either of them.
Eastwood: Loved Million Dollar Baby and Mystic River, but they're the exceptions to his drowsy style, which usually puts me to sleep.
Hitchcock? Duds, you've gotta switch the autocensor off.

Hey thanks for the Eastwood nod. I do like him. As an actor and director. I'm with Will on the Scorcese thing. I like him and he's very technical like Kubrick but I just don't "love" his movies either. Indeed Zemeckis should have been in there. Perhaps we can add him. Wait till I tell Bob he wasn't included! Funny about directors, there always seems to be this film studies like pedestal for certain directors. Scorcese, Kubrick, Kurosawa, a bit of a "wow aren't they great", "I'm a true film studies buff as I don't go for the commercial but the true artists..." Etc. Also, never been a big fan of Tarantino. He knows how to copy from the best amazingly well, but that's exactly what it is, copying. I'm waiting for his "Usual Suspects". An original piece, that's has his trademarks for his fans, but something with a story and who doesn't get bogged down with his own self worth. I did like Pulp and Jackie Brown but the Kill Bill's had to be some of the most self indulgent cack I have ever seen. It should have been one film... Anyway. Zemeckis, Spielberg, Eastwood. Eveyone else is just...not as good. Also turned off the crap censored word thing! Shit! Bugger!
