Just to clarify, this is the 2003 Ang Lee version ;D So, I watched this film again last night, and suddenly noticed how well made it was, and decided that Ang Lee is 'mazin! Visually, its just great. The comic-bookish fades and montages add to the atmosphere, and there are some really nice shots, actually including wides to guide the audience! The way he tackled showing Bruce's thoughts, mixing memory with a kind of symbolism (like when his reflection is the Hulk "puny human" .. great!") it's all good. Every scene was stuffed with visual references (like when he holds the globe on his shoulders for a sec, in the lab) or the primary colours in the underground base, which link to Bruce's childhood (yes Paul, like in the Krispie remake . . . ) and there are some v convincing performances, particularly from Nick Nolte and Sam Elliott, the er, disfunctional fathers. It's got some really funny moments, and there are a few moving scenes too. The only criticisms I have are...at points, some weak dialogue, which makes it hard for Jennifer Connelly to shine. There were a couple of messy shots which got on my nerves, and I think the mutant dogs were unnecessary... I think Banner Sr. as a "dirty old man" was overemphasised (though convincingly cringey) and by the end the comic-panel scene changes and montages begin to confuse and grate a little. All that aside...what a great film! I want to go watch it again now I reckon the critics were harsh not to put it up there with Spidey and Batman etc. Thoughts everyone? Emily

It's difficult for me to comment on this in that much detail as I've only seen it the once at the cinema when it was first released - but I do remember liking it and being more than a little surprised at some of the backlash it suffered.
I thought it was a good story and yes well handled by Mr. Lee. I imagine Louis Leterrier's sequel will be something quite different!

It's a near perfect film for me, I don't get why it was so slated at the time either. Maybe it was because people expected a lot of Hulk Smash! action and got plenty of thoughtful drama along with the visual effects. I love it.

That's exactly what it was. People thought they were getting wam bamm action all the way.But when it turned out to be more...cerebral they didn't get it.
Although I must admit, the finale was slightly damp. Just when you think he's gonna rampage thro Frisco he decides to calm down abit. Would have been good to see him throw a few of dem boulders. I think the sequel might over compensate for this tho. I bit like when people thought the first Mission was too complex. So they made the sequel kinda weak on the narrative front.
Wait and see. 2008 I think for Hulky 2.
