Aside from the somewhat bitty structure of the final quarter, the only real ‘failing’ of this superb film is that the superior sequel builds even further on its strengths. Otherwise it’s comic book perfection, distilling 40 years of four-colour continuity into 2 hours of adventurous and emotional celluloid. It’s everything you go to the cinema for – it’s funny (“I picked up a fruit cake”), sweet (“You’re taller than you look”), heartbreakingly sad (“I missed him a lot today”), exciting (any Spidey sequence is my childhood imagination come to life), scary (the Green Goblin’s conversation with himself in the mirror), romantic (the scene between MJ and Peter in the hospital). It’s got it all. Tobey Maguire is superb as the title character and he’s backed up by a cracking cast, the standouts being Cliff Robertson and Rosemary Harris, warm and wonderful as Peter’s adoptive family. Well, it’s just an instant classic, and one of the all-time great comic book adaptations.

You know what I completely agree with Mr. Griffin's comments posted above.
However, something that struck me in the cinema and every time I've watched it since is the Green Goblin's mask. I HATE it. It just looks crap and plastic. Like a fooking Power Ranger! Not really a scary costume for your villian to wear. Hmmm. Hope they improve it for Spidey 3.
But also, Spiderman and it's sequel, the X men and X2, Hulk, Batman Begins and Superman Returns all show how you can have such solid filmmaking, with good characters, storylines, and action all in one. How you can make anything less than that now (Fantastic Four) is a mystery. Well, actually it's not, it's just bad film making. As per my Robin Hood review, "it's just for kids and they won't notice/care" is no longer an excuse...

Yeah, the Goblin isn't the best. The suit looks fine except for close ups where he's talking and you're watching this frozen, open-mouthed mask. Doesn't really work. Willem Dafoe's very good though.

Spiderman and the X-men movies rock! Definitely. That's Bryan Singer's X-Men films by the way...ahem.....
The 3rd looks spectacular too - it's great how they're always looking to explore the next levels of Parker's mental torment so to speak to - fitting in the action and the villains around where his head's gonna be at for that film. None of this, here's the action scene - forge that into a script. They skipped Michael Bay's office for that one.
"You know what - I don't think I really took full advantage of the whole car chase thing in Bad Boys 2 - should have done more - got any scripts knockin' about?"
"Uh, something here called the Island? It's about...."
"Doesn't matter, get the Bay Buster over here ASAP and find me a freeway to shut down. We're gonna blow some shit up! Woo!"
"Michael wait stop! Shit, he's gone......."
We love him really ;D BB2 is a welcome addition to my DVD collection, I can't lie......
Anyway yeah, been a spate of quality comic book movies recently - Spiderman, Batman, Blade, X-Men, and yes I liked the Hulk too. With many more in the pipeline good things could well be on the horizon......
Not seen Fantastic Four myself but I've read the reviews lol.....Shame - though they weren't the best of the comic-book lot in all fairness - not a huge tragedy.
Will be interested to see the Punisher as well at some stage....Mixed opinions on that one.......

I think it was too late for that the second his pen touched the contract unfortunately - maybe he'll have Len Wiseman's number - we might just get there in time to save the Die Hard franchise!

Hell yeah! Live Free or Die Hard? What the hell is that?!? Come on guys, just call it Die Hard 4 if you're struggling - keeps things simple for the viewing public....

...you guys are right, there are so many good comic book films (not mentioning the not so fantastic 4..)
the best thing about Spidey is he's one of the most flawed of all the superheroes (except maybe batman...mmm christian bale...oh right, sorry!) cos he's young and corruptable. bless.
and its all big a metaphor for the troubles of adolescense too, tho im sure u knew that *sigh*

I'm reading James Cameron's treatment for his aborted version of Spider-Man at the mo, and there's a scene in it where a puberty-struck Peter wakes up one morning with white goo all over himself. It's his webbing, you know. SUBTLE.
