From the trailer I had a few high hopes for this. Mark Walhberg plays an ex US Army sniper who retires to a ranch only to get called upon by Danny Glover from the US government to help protect the president from a possible sniper assassination. From the trailer they give away the fact that the whole thing is a set up and Danny Glover is the bad guy, but wouldn't that be the only way to go with a film like this? A twist, would be when he isn't the bad guy!
I found it to be slightly long at just over 2 hours when a film like this should be 1h 45 tops. Talky scenes drag a little bit like they almost beefed it up just so it ISN'T 90 minutes and people think it's a no brain actioner. Better to admit to what you are and be better for it.
Antoine Fuqua can indeed direct action. Tears of the Sun (4) had some great moments and was a solid film. Where the film faults is on two levels. One, by the movie's subject alone, it means most of the action happens a mile away from Marky Mark's rifle, as he's a sniper and also two, he never really makes any mistakes. NOT ONE. Well, apart from not seeing Danny Glover's jacket with Villain written across the back. In most movies the hero has to do something wrong to make him fallible even if it's in his personal life and not professional. Costner falls for Whitney in the Bodyguard (4), Indiana Jones (5) doesn't manage to keep any of the things he goes after, even Capt Wilson in Katie's Mission (?) gets shot! ;-). So...Marky mark, something to think about for Shooter 2 huh?
*** when it should have been a ****
