*** 1/2 probably a **** next time
I was really looking forward to this movie and I did enjoy it. I loved the story, the look, the lighting, the director, the actors...
However, there seemed to be one too many timelines running at once and I honestly found it hard to keep up...just! The film jumps about all over the place, from about 4 different time periods. I would spend the first part of each scene working out exactly where in the story I was, when I did work it out I had lost the first 30 seconds or minute. That's okay every so often, but having to do it every scene is just damn exhausting! I think second time round, knowing the story, I will enjoy it so much more....
Any thoughts?

I'd go with the 4 stars myself, I admit it certainly demanded your full attention - but the story helped keep me into it ie. it was never a drag to do so - I felt Christian Bale was great to watch in his part and the story arc of Jackman's obsession and what it ultimately pushes him to is great.
Cracking twist at the end too.
Another expertly handled movie by Nolan and kudos to him once again for piecing together such a tricky script both in writing and directing. Will he ever actually start a film at the beginning? Lol.
A great watch - though go with your brain fully switched on as Paul said.

I just watched this film and Ive also give it four shiny stars. Although the plot was hard to keep up with, it was nice to watch something which was intellectually challenging - I think it's good that Nolan decided not to just shove everything in our face (in chronological order lol) There were lots of interesting characters and emotions flying around too, and it was generally well shot (although I reckon turn of the century London deserved more screentime instead of sticking inside theatres all the time; I know it was already pretty lengthy but what a great setting!) Throw in a bit more smog next time and it could be 5 stars And I agree Si, Christian Bale was great. Not sure about Scarlett though, she has yet to win me over. But at least they didnt butcher the london accent (From Hell, sorry Johnny : Emily
