*** 1/2 - Few spoilers
Mel Gibson's HD effort in full Mayan language with subtitles is here....
As the film finished I decided that I liked the movie. But when you boil it down to the narrative roots, it's a long art house, action epic chase movie! Basically, a community is raided and most are killed and some captured for sacrifice. One man Jaguar Paw manages to hide his family and after getting captured and escaping, starts the long journey back through the forest to get back to them with half a dozen savages on his tail.
The film overall is very good. Drags a lot when they have been captured and make their way to the temples to be killed but picks up pace after that. Some bits are a bit gory for gores sake, but according to Mel, it was even worse and they had to cut bits out. Being shot in HD, (High Definition video) sometimes comes through on the action scenes and it can't seem to handle the blacks too well getting slightly grainy in the night scenes.
Worth a look and don't let the subtitles put you off. Frankly subtitles shouldn't put you off anyway as your mind soon forgets it's doing it and to see a film not in it's native tongue but dubbed is....(shudders) Right Em?

Damn straight, films should be appreciated with their original performances otherwise its a different film!! Subtitles are fun ;D ..The one exception is Howl's Moving Castle (one of the best Gibli Studio films) because it was adapted from an english book and I cant resist listening to Christian Bale's husky voice...
